    While Timor-Leste has taken steps to establish a legal and institutional framework for a transparent, accountable and democratic state, the country has been slow in adopting the legal framework for anti-corruption, with the Law on Anti-Corruption pending in Parliament since 2011 and the country yet to adopt a National Anti-Corruption Strategy. Timor-Leste’s performance on different global indices continues to be poor, with a ranking of 101 out of 176 countries in the Transparency International Corruption Perception Index 2016.

  • Timor-Leste Parliamentary Elections July 2017: Disability Access Monitoring

    In 2017, Timor-Leste conducted two national elections: Presidential Election on 20th March 2017 and Parliamentary Election on 22nd July 2017. In order to assess the accessibility of these elections to persons with disabilities, Ra’es Hadomi Timor Oan (RHTO), supported by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), and the UNDP LEARN Project, conducted disability access monitoring for these two elections.

    The UNDP project entitled Leveraging Electoral Assistance for Regionalized Nation-Building (LEARN), funded by the Government of Japan and Korea, builds on the achievements of previous UNDP electoral assistance projects and aims to provide technical assistance to Timorese Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs) throughout the entire electoral cycle, with a strong focus on civic and voter education, taking into account support already provided to Suco (village) elections in 2016 and Presidential and Parliamentary elections in 2017.
