UNDP’s mangrove project ‘Building Shoreline Resilience of Timor-Leste to Protect the Local Community and Their Livelihoods’ also known as the Costal Resilience Building Project has successfully completed more than two years of operation in Timor Leste. The policy framework and institutional capacity for climate resilient coastal management, mangrove supportive livelihoods to incentivize mangrove restoration, and adoption of integrated approaches to coastal adaptation are the key outcomes that the project aims to achieve.

During this documentation process of Timor Leste Mangrove, the author has sighted about 35 species (including previous identifications) including some back mangroves and mangrove associates which plays an integral part of this coast ecosystem were identified and documented with photographs and brief descriptions needs further conservations efforts to restore and regeneration process. The project extensively supports communities living around knowledge and skill transfer for better restoration and regeneration of the mangrove ecosystems in all project Municipalities.

The assignment “National Coastal Vulnerability Assessment and Designing of Integrated Coastal Management and Adaptation Strategic Plan for Timor-Leste” is a part of the project “Building Shoreline Resilience of Timor-Leste to Protect Local Communities and Their Livelihoods”, funded by the Global Environmental Facility. The aim was addressing key climate change induced challenges of the coastal areas in Timor-Leste, by conducting an extensive coastal vulnerability assessment1. The results of the assessment served as a basis to develop a set of appropriate National Coastal Adaptation Strategies.

As mangroves are a vital natural defense to the impacts of climate change, extensive mangroves and coastal wetlands ecosystem protection and restoration interventions will be implemented while strengthening alternative livelihoods options and integrated approaches to coastal adaptation to protect the coastal communities and productive lands. Public awareness raising about the important role of coastal ecosystems in shoreline protection and climate change adaptation and mitigation is an integral part of the programme.

The aim of this report is to help the efforts for mangrove restoration in Timor-Leste, particularly by providing the current biophysical state of mangroves in the country that could be used to design the area, target species, and methods of restoration.
