Following the successful presidential and parliamentary elections held earlier this year, the National Police of Timor-Leste (PNTL) in  coordination from UNDP, has begun a series of workshops on strengthening the cooperation of post-election security in 12 municipalities and 1 Special Administrative Region across Timor-Leste from August to October 2017.

On the 18th of August, the PNTL and UNDP conducted the first workshop in Dili. Participants in attendance were, police officers of Dili, PNTL Municipality commanders and members, heads of the suco from Dili including Fatuhada, Mascarinhas, Kuluhun, Comoro, Motael and youth representatives from various secondary schools.

Participants heard from the Dili PNTL Commander about the Martial Arts Law that forbids specific weapons and violence.

During the workshop, the heads of the sucos from Dili also presented their opinions and suggestions on violence-related issues such as martial arts and other safety concerns to the PNTL commanders.

The Dili District Commander responded that peace and stability will only be achieved through cooperation among communities through local authorities such as Head of Sucos and with security institutions including PNTL.
