Importance of renewable energy supply highlighted at biomass project board meeting

Participants met to review progress of the project and to plan and discuss the way forward for the remainder of the project life

Around 30 participants from the Government, academia and civil society organizations participated in the meeting

On 07 March 2018 a UNDP-Global Environment Facility (GEF) board meeting was held at Electricidade De Timor-Leste (EDTL) in Dili to review progress of the Promoting Sustainable Bio-Energy Production from Biomass project to date and to plan and discuss the way forward for the remainder of the project life. (Lee versaun Tetum iha ne'e)

Joined by around 30 participants from the government, academia and civil society organizations, Mr. Virgilio Guterres, Director General of Electricity and Chair of the Project Board emphasized the importance of renewable energy supply for the development of Timor-Leste.

He also stressed the importance of bio-energy solutions for addressing inter-linked development issues such as deforestation, indoor air pollution and the impact on the health of women and children in rural areas.

He also focused on UNDP’s assistance to build capacity locally of Government officials, private sector and academia for promotion of biomass energy.

Mr. Claudio Providas, UNDP Country Director, highlighted the huge potential of sustainable bio-energy production of the country and need for sustainable energy to meet growing demand and economic development in line with the SDGs.
