March 20, 2018

This seminar is a continuation of a previous seminar conducted in October 2017.

On 15-16 March, the Public Defender Office (PDO) together with the UNDP Justice System Programme (JSP) organized an international seminar ‘The Timorese Justice System and Public Defender’s Office in the Intercultural Context.’

This seminar is a continuation of a previous seminar ‘The Role of Public Defenders in Guaranteeing Human Rights and Social Public Policies,’ conducted in October 2017.

Topics included the 16 years of the international cooperation in the justice sector of Timor-Leste, achievements and challenges of training legal professionals, an interface between the formal and traditional justice focused on the reform of the family law, and the role of public defenders in linking traditional methods of conflict resolution with human rights and constitutional law.

The seminar was attended by the Minister of Justice, President of the Court of Appeal and Public Defender-General and is part of the south-south cooperation between Governments of Timor-Leste and Brazil and UNDP. The JSP is funded by the Governments of Korea and Japan.
