    Legal Training Centre Hosts Debate on Professional Ethics

    Magistrates, public defenders and other legal professionals participated in a seminar on ethics and deontology in the judicial professions, organized by the Legal Training Centre (LTC). Focused specifically on the concerns particular to Judges and Prosecutors, the event held on 1st August was the first of a series of discussions on judicial ethics planned by the LTC for the upcoming months.

    New GoTL, UNDP and UNCDF programme focuses on decentralization and local development for poverty reduction

    The Government of Timor-Leste, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) today endorsed a new programme of cooperation which is designed to contribute towards poverty reduction and local development. Known as the Sub-National Governance and Development Programme (2014-2018) (SNGDP) the programme will strengthen institutions for decentralised governance, improve participation, and enhance local capacities to deliver services, particularly to the most vulnerable groups in poor communities.

    In front of an audience of 55 leaders from the Covalima district, the Secretary of State for Administrative Decentralization (SEDA) and the Secretary of State for Institutional Strengthening (SEFI) joined together to socialize Decree Law No. 4/2014, the Organic Statute of Administrative Pre-Deconcentration Structure and training policy for leaders of the Pre-Deconcentration Structure.

    Rebuild the mangrove forest, rebuild the community

    Dili, 21 March 2014 - Years of damage by both nature and the community have slowly destroyed many of the country’s mangrove forests, impacting the livelihoods of the people living in coastal areas throughout Timor-Leste. The Government, district leaders, the Community Based Organization Agrikultura e Peskas Estrela do Futuro (APEF) and university students have set out to reverse the problem in Ulmera suco (village) Liquica district, by planting approximately 200 new mangrove saplings to help rebuild the once thriving forest.

    GoTL and UNDP Sign Cost-Sharing Agreement to Support for Deconcentration

    Dili, 14 March, 2014 – The Government of Timor-Leste and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today signed an agreement that will provide Government funding to UNDP for support of the country’s Administrative Pre-Deconcentration. The US$750,000 cost-sharing agreement increases resources available to support UNDP’s existing and planned work in strengthening sub-national governance and follows the promulgation of Decree Law No. 4/2014 mandating the establishment of a strong, democratic, and efficient local governance system.

    Young women encouraged to join national police of Timor-Leste

    The National Police of Timor-Leste (PNTL) are increasing their efforts to recruit more women to the force. Supported by UNDP, the first campaign specifically targeting young women will run for the entire month of March. Comprised of two TV commercials, two radio commercials and one eight-minute video, the campaign will be broadcast daily on Timor’s national broadcaster, RTTL.

    UNDP and Australia partner to strengthen coordination in the Justice System

    Dili – UNDP and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) have signed an agreement in support of UNDP’s long-running programme focused on strengthening the Timor-Leste’s Justice System. Under the agreement, signed 10 February, 2014 DFAT allocates US$608,702 towards UNDP’s “Consolidating the Democratic Rule of Law and Peace through a strong Justice System in Timor-Leste”, more widely known as the Justice System Programme (JSP).
