    UNDP Assistant Administrator Haoliang Xu Returns to Timor-Leste

    Mr. Haoliang Xu, Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Asia and Pacific for the United Nations Development Programme, will visit Timor-Leste from 8 to 12 July, 2014. This will be his first visit to Timor-Leste since he served as UNDP’s Country Manager and Senior Deputy Resident Representative from 2002-2004.

    New GoTL, UNDP and UNCDF programme focuses on decentralization and local development for poverty reduction

    The Government of Timor-Leste, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) today endorsed a new programme of cooperation which is designed to contribute towards poverty reduction and local development. Known as the Sub-National Governance and Development Programme (2014-2018) (SNGDP) the programme will strengthen institutions for decentralised governance, improve participation, and enhance local capacities to deliver services, particularly to the most vulnerable groups in poor communities.

    GoTL and UNDP Sign Cost-Sharing Agreement to Support for Deconcentration

    Dili, 14 March, 2014 – The Government of Timor-Leste and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today signed an agreement that will provide Government funding to UNDP for support of the country’s Administrative Pre-Deconcentration. The US$750,000 cost-sharing agreement increases resources available to support UNDP’s existing and planned work in strengthening sub-national governance and follows the promulgation of Decree Law No. 4/2014 mandating the establishment of a strong, democratic, and efficient local governance system.

    Peacebuilding Collaboration Strengthens Links between Justice, Police and Social Solidarity

    Timor-Leste has enjoyed the longest period of peace and stability since the security breakdown in 2006. However peace cannot be taken for granted. It is recognized that countries only recover from conflict if they can create a window of time where they are free from further conflict. While there are clear indications of progress and an accepted level of stability, the drivers of certain conflicts are still to be resolved to prevent a resurgence of instability in the country.

    UNDP Report Looks at Barriers to Justice for Victims of Domestic Violence

    An estimated 30-50 percent of Timorese women continue to suffer abuse from their partners at some point in their relationship. This is in spite of the country’s Law Against Domestic Violence (LADV), promulgated by the Government in 2010, that defines it a public crime which requires the state to respond whether a victim files a criminal complaint or not.

    Provedor for Human Rights and Justice Presents Eight Years of Progress in Timor-Leste

    In a clear recognition of the importance of its impact on human rights in Timor-Leste, Dr. Sebastiao Dias Ximenes, the Provedor for Human Rights and Justice, presented the Parliament today with a detailed report on the institution’s activities and achievements since its establishment in 2006. It was the first time in the national human rights institution’s eight year history that the National Parliament had requested such a report before the Plenary.
