United Nations Assistant Secretary General and UNDP Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific to visit Timor-Leste

Dili, 17th May 2017 – The UN Assistant Secretary General and UNDP’s Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Mr. Haoliang Xu, will visit Timor-Leste from the 19th to 25th of May 2017.

Mr. Xu will represent the UN Secretary-General during the “Global SDGs Conference on the 2030 Agenda: A Roadmap for SDGs in Fragile and Conflict-affected States”, which will be held on the 22-23 May 2017. He will deliver opening remarks on behalf of the UN Secretary-General, and will also make a key intervention on key features of a successful Road Map for SDG implementation in fragile and conflict-affected states.

At the celebration of Timor-Leste’s 15th anniversary of its Restoration of Independence, and the inauguration of the President Elect, H.E. Mr. Francisco Guterres “Lu-Olo”, on 19 and 20 May, the UN Secretary-General will be represented by his Chef de Cabinet, Ms. Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, accompanied by the UNDP Regional Director.

The “Global SDGs Conference on the 2030 Agenda: A Roadmap for SDGs in Fragile and Conflict-affected States” is organized by the Government of Timor-Leste in partnership with the members of the informal High Level Support Group for SDGs and the g7+ Secretariat, with support from the UN in Timor-Leste. It is expected that around 200 high level government officials from g7+ member states and other conflict effected countries will participate.

The six-day visit to Timor-Leste will also provide Mr. Xu the opportunity to witness first-hand the UNDP’s operations and programmes at the country level. It is also an opportunity for him to personally meet and discuss with high level officials from the Government of Timor-Leste and development partners on the ongoing partnership and future initiatives in the implementation of SDGs. He will also meet programme beneficiaries in rural and urban areas particularly in Ermera.

Appointed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations on 13 August 2013, Mr. Xu oversees UNDP support to country and regional sustainable development programmes in 36 countries in Asia and Pacific. Previously, among other things, he was the Deputy Regional Director for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States, and held senior UNDP positions in Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Timor-Leste and Iran.
