Briefing to election observers

Dili, 09/03/2022 – The Election Observer Briefing for the Presidential Election 2022 taken place with representatives from UNDP, the Governments of Japan and Timor-Leste, EU Election Observation Mission, STAE and CNE.

On March 9th, Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE), with the support from the UNDP COVID-Resilient Elections in Timor-Leste (CORE-TL) project, took place a briefing to election observers on their roles in the upcoming electoral cycle. The briefing session, held at Hotel Timor, was attended by representatives of the Ministry of State Administration, the Government of Japan, UN Resident Coordinator Office, UNDP, EU Election Observation Mission, STAE and the National Commission of Election (CNE).

“The 2022 Presidential Election is significantly different, in terms of a highly competitive elections with 16 candidates, inclusion of the first-time voters, and the uneasy situation of COVID-19” addressed by Ms. Munkhtuya Altangerel, UNDP Resident Representative.

Then, international Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) stated “We will provide technical support to the Electoral Management Bodies (STAE and CNE), establishing durable plans and manuals integrated with health and safety regulations of COVID-19 while keeping electoral integrity.”.

At the briefing, the overview of the 2022 presidential election was explained by IDEA, and the UNDP CORE-TL project provided electoral information materials to the observers. All the information is also available online: https://linktr.ee/undp_coretl

The UNDP CORE-TL project promotes the COVID-safe, informative and inclusive elections at national and municipality levels. The project is funded from the Government of Japan with USD 4 million and from the Government of Timor-Leste with USD 360 thousand.
